CLADDAGH BAND
THE ORIGIN OF THE CLADDAGH RING IS ATTRIBUTED TO RICHARD JOYCE WHO WAS FROM GALWAY AS FROM A TOWN CALLED CLADDAGH. HE WAS TAKEN BY THE CROMWELLIANS TO WORK IN SLAVERY ON THE PLANTATIONS OF THE WEST INDIES. THE BOAT ON WHICH YOUNG RICHARD FOUND HIMSELF ON WAS CAPTURED BY MOORISH PIRATES. HIS NEW MASTER WAS A MOORISH GOLDSMITH WHO TAUGHT HIM HIS CRAFT AND WHEN HE RETURNED TO GALWAY IN THE LATE 1600'S HE SET UP A WORKSHOP IN THE CLADDAGH REGION.

WHAT THE CLADDAGH MOTIF SIGNIFIES WE CANNOT BE SURE, BUT BY TRADITION IT IS BELIEVED TO DENOTE THAT FRIENDSHIP AND LOVE SHOULD REIGN SUPREME. TWO HANDS CRADLING A CROWNED HEART, THE HEART FOR LOVE, THE HANDS FOR FRIENDSHIP AND THE CROWN FOR LOYALTY.

THE CLADDAGH IS WORN BY PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD, WHEN THE RING IS WORN WITH THE CROWN FACING OUTWARDS IT SIGNIFIES THAT THE HEART IS OPEN (LOOKING FOR LOVE). WEARING IT WITH THE CROWN FACING INWARDS MEANS THAT TWO HEARTS ARE JOINED, (YOUR HEART IS TAKEN).
