The Book of Kells is an 8th century Irish illuminated gospel book. Written in Latin it contains the four Gospels of the New Testament and is thought to have been created around 800AD in an Irish monastery. It is considered a masterpiece of Western calligraphy and complex illustration. The decoration combines traditional Christian iconography with ornate swirling shapes, such as Celtic Knots which have since become staples of Celtic design. The Book of Kells is considered and Irish national treasure and can be seen in Dublin.
