Sterling silver and gold plated drop earrings, combining the Celtic designs of Newgrange and the Trinity Knot
Description
Newgrange is a pre-historic tomb found in Co. Meath. The tomb was built by farmers from the Boyne Valley around 3,200 BC and is known worldwide for its impressive architecture and celebration of the Winter Solstice. Every year, at sunrise on the day of the Winter Solstice, the sun aligns with the tombs narrow entrance perfectly, illuminating every room. The Megalithic stone artwork found at Newgrange heavily influenced subsequent Celtic design, and the swirling pattern found on the tombs entrance stone has inspired these pieces of jewellery. Newgrange is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Trinity Knot is one of the most recognisable Celtic designs. The knot is believed to have been fashioned by the Celtic Christian Church to represent the holy trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Depictions of The Trinity Knot can be found on Celtic artefacts dating back to the 8th Century, including the Book of Kells. Comprising of three interlaced loops, it is commonly used as a symbol of consistency and eternity.
